BEACHES & ISLANDS

BEACHES

With a coastline of 2700 kilometers, Mozambique is the ideal destination for those looking for beach, sea, sun and tranquility. The paradisiacal beaches of Mozambique have not yet been discovered by mass tourism. The fine white sand, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the African landscape and excellent opportunities for diving complete the picture.

From Maputo beach, with its both African and Mediterranean atmosphere, to the more remote beaches of Xai Xai, Inhambane and Tofo, there is a beach for every taste. Numerous luxury resorts guarantee exclusivity and tranquility. The Mozambique coast is ideal for a relaxing holiday. If you like a more active holiday and adventure, you can always opt for water sports such as surfing or kite-surfing, or other activities like horseback riding on the beach, fishing, whale watching and scuba diving.

Diving off the coast of Mozambique is an unforgettable experience. The country has one of the best places in the world for this purpose, with an extraordinary biodiversity. There are reefs with an abundance of tropical fish, and in deeper water you can see whale sharks, bat-fish, sea turtles and sharks. At various points along the coast you can swim with dolphins!

ISLANDS

The pristine beaches of Mozambique provide direct contact with nature, but the islands of Mozambique offer all this plus a touch of exclusivity. The archipelagoes of Quirimbas, in the north, and Bazaruto in the south, are paradises lost. Forget all about stress when you’re here, as everything goes to the rhythm of the tide. During the day, enjoy the beach and plunge in the water. At night, the spectacle of the stars of the southern hemisphere makes you forget the television. Many beach resorts offer beauty and wellness treatments.

A popular way to discover the various islands of the two archipelagos is by dhow (small traditional boats with lateen sails). It is not uncommon to see dolphins from the deck of the boat, and at the right time, it is possible to observe whales. Scuba diving is also possible here.

A stay in the Quirimbas Archipelago or Bazaruto Archipelago would not be complete without tasting the local cuisine. Naturally, it’s all about seafood and tropical fruits. Enjoy your delicious and healthy lunch or dinner, based on the local catch of grouper, mackerel, lobster and the famous tiger prawns.

If you want to combine beach with culture and history, the Island of Mozambique, UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a destination not to be missed. It’s in the north of the country. For four centuries, this island was occupied by the Portuguese, who built several palaces, churches, chapels and Fort San Sebastian. In addition to the historical and cultural heritage, the Island of Mozambique also offers beautiful beaches, and is ideal for scuba diving.

ARCHIPELAGO

Following the division of the African continent by European colonial powers, during the Berlin Conference of 1885, Mozambique became a Portuguese colony. In 1964, FRELIMO (Mozambique Liberation Front), launched an armed conflict against Portugal, which resulted in its independence on 25 June 1975.

HISTORY & CULTURE

Mozambique's independence was followed by a civil war, from 1976 to 1992. The war was fought by FRELIMO, the ruling party, and Renamo, a rebel group backed by the Apartheid regime in South Africa, and Rhodesia. The war came to an end in 1992. A Peace Agreement was signed in Rome. The first Mozambican democratic elections were held in 1994.
